"Jul," he began. Trouble was, he didn't know where to go next.
She filled the silence by saying, "I'm sorry about the gamepieces. I don't know why I jumped into Isak that way. I was just... startled, I guess."
"That's one of the things I want to talk about. Why were you so startled when I offered you the mancala stones? You seem very... well, wary... of being around me. Is it... are you afraid of me, Jul? I know we don't know each other very well--"
"I'm not afraid of you. I've seen how gentle you are with the children, how patient you are with all of us."
"Then what? Have I hurt your feelings?"
Her lips tightened as she tried to form her answer. Marc's neck grew stiff and he raised his head from the wall. Putting his feet on the floor, he leaned his forearms on his knees. Obviously, he had offended her somehow. In the painful silence, a tendril of shame curled and burned through his abdomen. He had accomplished the one thing he had struggled not to do the first time they'd met -- show her how different they were, how coarse he could be. It was just as well; she would surely despise him once they arrived at Iberon.
"Marc, please understand."
She fell silent again, and Marc could hear her breathing, labored as if volatile words were threatening to erupt.
"Just say it!" he demanded, unable to bear the acid in his soul.
"All right, I will." She took another deep breath and lifted her chin. "I have no desire to lie to you, Marc. It's just very hard... for me to say this. I think... I think... you're an amazing man. I know this trip is much more difficult than you expected, yet you've done a lot to make it easier on everyone else, including me. I'll always be grateful for the kindness you've shown these children. I dare say they've never met a man who treats them the way you do, like the precious human beings they are. Sometimes... you treat me that way. When I was hurt, you reassured me and... and you told me things about yourself. I felt a connection to you, comfortable with you. But then -- I don't know -- you stopped looking at me."
Opposing waves of guilt and relief flooded Marc, drowning his words. He wanted to tell her what a profound effect the kids had had on him. They were precious human beings, each one unique and special to him after such a short time. Just as she was special. He wanted to be close to her, to discover and cherish everything about her.
Yet, Jul couldn't possibly love him and forget Gabe, especially not after only three days. And they were on their way to Iberon. If -- when -- he reported her to the Iberion authorities, they would never see each other again.
"It's the kids, your plans for the kids. I know I agreed not to ask any questions, but if I understood why you were taking them to Orum--"
"Please, ask me anything but that," she begged in anguish.
"Why can't you tell me?"
"You must trust me. These children had nothing on Akila. I'm taking them to a better life. That's all I can say. Please, please, don't ask me any more."
Her eyes were red from lack of sleep and barely restrained tears. She was in such obvious misery Marc couldn't keep pushing her. His heart could hear she believed she was taking them to a better life. She wasn't trafficking them out of greed or malice. Was that enough to excuse her from the legal consequences of her actions? Was that enough for him?
"I guess we both have secrets," he conceded. "I suppose we can work together in spite of them. Maybe we could... be friends while we're on the ship."
"I'd like very much to have you as a friend."
"Gabe won't feel we've betrayed him?"
"Gabe? No, why would Gabe mind? My friendship with you won't lessen my friendship with him."
"Friendship? You aren't... lovers?"
"Oh, no, I've never felt that way about Gabe. We're just very good friends. Like... like maybe you and I could be."
He couldn't help it. A wave of elation rolled over him, washing away a layer of shame he'd been carrying about his attraction to her. He took her hands and cradled them in his palms. The now-familiar rush of desire filled him. He ignored it, and knew he would have to stay strong enough to ignore it repeatedly, because he would no longer deprive himself of touching her. He studied her graceful fingers and stroked her wrists with his thumbs.
He glanced up at her face and found her eyes were closed. Long, dark lashes rested against the high, pink cheeks and Marc wondered what it would be like to kiss those eyelids, those cheeks, the slightly parted mouth. Yet, he was entrusted with her safekeeping, even from his unwelcome advances. This was no way for a friend to act. He placed her hands in her lap and sat back.
She opened her eyes and stared at him.Marc looked away and said, "I plan to talk to Isak about him and Min."
After a moment, she nodded. "Yes, I don't want to keep them apart longer than necessary."
"But, you said--"
"I know. But, I had a dream last night... Never mind. I just realized once you've found someone whom you love with your whole heart and spirit, spending one unnecessary minute away from them is like... like being in an airsuit in deep space. You know you have enough air and warmth to survive, but it's not the same as being in the spaceship."
"No, it's not the same." The quiet words slipped out, surprising Marc as much as Jul.
"Have you felt it? Is there someone you want to be with, but you can't?"
Marc scoffed. If she only knew. "Yes, I've felt it, chère. But in my case, it would never work. She wouldn't be interested, comprends?"
"Have you told her how you feel?"

The conversation was becoming too uncomfortable for Marc. He needed to change the direction his thoughts were flying. Friendship was better; he could offer friendship to Jul, and expect a rich friendship in return. He would never feel satisfied, but at least he would not have his heart wrenched out again, as his wife had done. An airsuit was better than nothing.

Fast paced, heart stopping action and a love for the ages are all contained in this wonderful story reminiscent of Moxie North.

When I See Her Smile
Bears in Love Book 2

Trevor has known heartache. Abandoned by one woman as a child and recently deceived by another, he has learned the only person he can count on is himself. Can Trevor open his heart and learn to trust again?

Rebecca Ann is done with men and their duplicitous nature. Her ex boyfriend was caught red-handed in the act with Rebecca's best friend. Will she ever be able to heal her soul from the deep emotional wounds left by her callous ex?

When two wounded souls meet, a smile from her is all it takes for the sparks to fly. Throw in an ex or two on a mission, a clan of grizzlies that will protect their own to their last breaths, and a little romance to nurture your soul, and you have one of the greatest powers on earth… Love.

When I see her Smile Book 2 Bears in Love Series…

Chapter 1

I didn't think I would ever meet my one, my soul mate. Fate has always laughed at me and jerked my life strings to and fro. From being raised in an orphanage because my mom couldn't handle a young shifter male without my father until I was found by Marcus on my twelfth birthday to thinking I had found my mate as a young adult. I blame my raging hormones for that shit show. I had just turned nineteen and she was beautiful, but that beauty held grasping, greedy evil thoughts and deeds behind her facade. She was almost the death of me, and when I found out she had been sent to infiltrate our clan and spy for Hatchet when Ian and Lauren were just mated, I lost what little hope I had for forever. Almost two years later and the clan is still trying to mend from her deviousness. And I am still alone, I have my clan who are like a family. But I don’t have my one. I am starting to think I lost my chance. I was not prepared for what happened next. Not one little bit.

I was sent into Fall City, Washington to get supplies for the week. While there, I visited The Roadhouse Restaurant and Inn, a small clapboard building that dated back to 1916, and that's when it happened. Instant hard-on and not just because she was beautiful, but because she was mine. She smiled at me as she walked up to my table to take my order and my polar bear rushed to the surface. Yep, a polar in a grizzly clan. Not something you see everyday, but Marcus the clans leader and all around giant grizzly is my pseudo-dad figure, and once you are in, that's it. Your clan, your family. I had to concentrate on holding my polar back. I got a whiff of her scent, like fresh snow and pine trees, I had to grip the table sides to keep myself in my seat. My polar, and if I am honest, my human self, wanted to grab up this vision and take her away to keep her to myself.

Book Promo and Giveaway: A Meddle of Wizards by Alexandra Rushe

A MEDDLE OF WIZARDS
by Alexandra Rushe
Genre: Fantasy

Pub Date: 1/9/2018

Welcome to Tandara, where gods are fickle, nightmares are real, and trolls make excellent bakers . . .
Raine Stewart is convinced she’ll die young and alone in Alabama, the victim of a chronic, mysterious illness. Until a man in a shabby cloak steps out of her mirror and demands her help to defeat a bloodthirsty wizard.
Raine shrugs it off as a hallucination—just one more insult from her failing body—and orders her intruder to take a hike. But the handsome figment of her imagination won’t take no for an answer, and kidnaps her anyway, launching her into a world of utmost danger—and urgent purpose.
Ruled by unpredictable gods and unstable nations, Tandara is a land of shapeshifters and weather-workers, queens and legends. Ravenous monsters and greedy bounty hunters patrol unforgiving mountains. Riverboats pulled by sea-cattle trade down broad waterways. And creatures of nightmare stalk Raine herself, vicious in the pursuit of her blood.
But Raine isn’t helpless or alone. She’s part of a band as resourceful as it is odd: a mage-shy warrior, a tattered wizard, a tenderhearted giant, and a prickly troll sorceress. Her new friends swear she has powers of her own. If she can stay under their protection, she might just live long enough to find out . . .

Alexandra Rushe was born in South Alabama, and grew up climbing trees, searching for sprites and fairies in the nearby woods, and dreaming of other worlds. The daughter of an English teacher and a small-town judge, Rushe developed a love of reading early on, and haunted the school and local libraries, devouring fairy tales, myths, and tales of adventure. In the seventh grade, she stumbled across a worn copy of The Hobbit, and was forever changed. She loves fantasy and paranormal, but only between the pages of a book—the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz give her the creeps, and she eschews horror movies. A psychic friend once proclaimed the linen closet in Rushe’s bedroom a portal to another dimension, and she hasn’t slept well since. Rushe is a world-class chicken.

Water, Beautiful, Dangerous, Magical
Guest Post by Catherine Stine

I’m a Capricorn, an earth sign, but in so many ways I’m a water girl. The ocean is my everything. I’m drawn to it for relaxation, fun and solace. It’s my spiritual compass. Its tides attract, its sea creatures inspire mystery, and its vast existence stretching back into pre-history boggles the mind. I’ve set two of my novels (Dorianna and Witch of the Cards) on the seashore; it’s a natural setting for the unfolding of drama.

And as magnificent as oceans, lakes, and rain are they can be terribly dangerous. To name a few examples think about the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, Katrina, Irma (my granny’s name!) and Maria, and the tsunami that hit Japan. I live in New York City and witnessed the wrath of Sandy. Cars floated away, some subway lines were destroyed and people perished in flooded basements. We were without power for five days and lived in a cold apartment lit by candles and flashlights. We got our news from short wave radio and spent the time the old-school way, playing cards.  We were lucky. Sandy was mild compared to some of the other storms. Water is not only perilous. It has its upsides, too. We need it to survive. We cannot live more than a few days without it.

Water is also a perfect vehicle for magic. Last year I took my first trip to Las Vegas, and to the musical fountain at the Bellagio Hotel. The minute I stood by it, I felt touched by magic and imagined that it was inhabited by hundreds of water sprites, who controlled the pulsing movements not by digital mechanics but by the rapid beating of their colored wings. I wondered what the sprites’ lives would be like and what their quests might be. My story “Maizy of Bellagio” in the Spirits in the Water anthology was born, just as Maizy was borne of a wishing penny someone had thrown in the fountain.

In the wake of the recent tragedy in Vegas I was nervous about presenting this story. But what better balm is there for heartbreak and horror than bringing back a little magic to Vegas, and joy to people’s hearts?

I have been writing since I was sixteen years old and love to write both horror and romantic suspense. I think there have been many influences within my life that has set me on the path that I can not help but walk. A few of those names consist of Karen Rose, Lisa Gardener, Nora Roberts, Cynthia Eden, Catherine Anderson, Laura Griffin, Andrea Kane, and Lisa Jackson, just to name a few. This list by no means defines by own writing but they have indeed influenced my desire to live outside of my own world and to create the thrill of my dreams. I live on 40 + acres in the SHOW ME state with my six year old daughter, with the wonderful addition of four dogs and a handful of chickens. The weather is unpredictable, but the surrounding beauty of the country helps my creativity as I sit on my top deck with my laptop and coffee close by.

EXCERPT
I’m going to die, she thought as claws large enough to crush a car reached for her. Her stomach launched into her throat as the creature picked her up. She screamed, her voice lost amidst the screech of its wingbeats. She groped for the zeitgeber in her pocket but feared that it would slip out of her hands because of her damaged shoulder. They were high in the sky, flying towards a red glow in the mountains. She had never imagined such a creature in her life. It was from hell itself. Panic engulfed her, sending bile into her mouth. Gagging, she tried to hold back the surge of vomit but couldn’t. Hot, acidic fluid gushed in sporadic intervals. The beast swung to the right and low to the ground as she continued to heave. The nauseating ride felt worse than a roller coaster. Her head swung from side to side as the motion of the flying beast slowed. Groggily, she turned her head and looked down as her stomach lunged once more towards her throat. A pair of burning eyes below her caught her attention. A figure, dressed in smoky black clothes and hidden inside a dark cloak watched her being carried like a helpless rabbit in the claws of an eagle. She did the only thing she could. As she opened her mouth and felt her stomach contents rise, she directed it towards the figure with the burning eyes. A tiny act of defiance in the face of approaching death.

Writing has always been a hobby and cathartic experience for me. Turning my passion into a fulfilling career as an Author has been one of my greatest dreams. I write because creating something that didn't exist before is as close to magic as I'll ever get. All you need is imagination.
I’ve always been passionate about storytelling and impressed by the influence it has on people and the decisions they make in life. I love engaging with the projects I work on, diving headfirst into the research, investigation, and production of stories I feel are worth writing about. I am a curious and proactive Author, interested in preserving the foundations set by classical literature by adapting them to modern themes and trends.

Erika Holt seeks a respite from the constant threats to her life but she’s not about to give up. As she and Tex launch a mission to shut down the galactic highway used by the predatory M'Uktah, she grows closer to her troubled half-human companion. But what about her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Jack?

Jack Wilson, with his new friend Anna Sturgis, is determined to put an end to the Makers’ schemes for world domination. Complicating matters, an anti-viral that could save millions from an alien virus has been stolen.

As both alien and human forces line up against them, the destiny of all mankind is hand the hands of these young warriors. And time is running out.

The Four Seasons of H.A.L.F.

If you were a season, what season would you be? Are you a fiery, passionate summer? A cool, calm winter?

I had not considered this in terms of my characters while writing, but I recently wondered what seasons are my characters?

Erika Holt, the main character of the H.A.L.F. series, has a fiery nature. She’s passionate about causes but nothing brings out her fire more than someone messing with the people she cares about. She’d go to the ends of the Earth—and beyond!—for her friends. Erika represents the heat of summer.

Tex, aka H.A.L.F. 9, personifies the changeable nature of fall. One minute the weather is mild, the next blustery. In autumn it’s like the weather is trying to make up its mind. Tex can seem that way as well, but maybe it’s because he’s still trying to figure out how to be human. Fall may be unpredictable, but we love it anyway. That’s how Erika seems to feel about Tex too!

Of all the characters you’ll meet in the H.A.L.F. series, I think Anna Sturgis is like the cold breath of winter more than any of the others. With her icy blue eyes and golden curtain of hair, she looks like a “winter,” and her personality matches. It’s not that she’s a cold person. Jack gets to see her personable side. But Anna is cool and collected, reasoned and logical. In short, she is often everything that Erika isn’t. Can Jack fall for a winter girl after being so in love with a summer?

Speaking of Jack, he is a spring breeze. With his sun-kissed curly blonde locks, laid-back flip-flops and loose-fitting jeans, Jack is like a shoot of bright green new growth poking up through the soil. He’s a peace-loving, guitar-strumming lover not a fighter. Jack faces life and death situations throughout the H.A.L.F. series. After stepping over dead bodies on the battlefield, will his sweet spring nature endure?
