Book Description:

Corpus Christi, Texas, police detective Tevis McLeod, an elf, must make an impossible choice: aid the evil Queen of the Unseelie Court in a quest that will allow her to become ruler over two worlds … or watch Kat Morales, his Human partner, and lifemate, die.

Excerpt:
Kat Morales felt a tingle of nerves between her shoulders as she and her partner entered Miguelito's. Something watched them – not some one, not anyone in the knot of uniformed police and civilians gathered at the doors into the restaurant's kitchen. What burned at the nape of Kat's neck, and turned the greenblack amulet around her neck into ice so cold it almost burned, came from some … thing. A creature, definitely not Human. Kat stopped a couple of steps past the entrance, scanning her surroundings. Miguelito's had gone lavish in Christmas decorations: arrangements of poinsettias on every Spanish-tiled table in sight, bright-colored pinatas around the bar at the far end of the room, a six-pointed star of Magic-enhanced light strands hanging from the ceiling in the room's center, with more light strands radiating outward toward the walls in a simulation of starlight.
And overriding everything, the decorations, murals on the walls – everything –
That sensation prickling at the nape of Kat's neck, that feeling of being watched by something dark and malevolent.
“Invisible,” Tevis murmured, his gaze meeting hers.
Not her imagination then. He felt it too.
He nodded, as though in response to her thoughts. A couple of inches taller than Kat's own five-feet-six, hair a pale gold in color, eyes the most incredible shade of blue Kat had ever seen, Tevis Mac Leod at first glance could pass for a late-twenty-something Human. But then you noticed the ears, pointed as those of a fox, that identified him as an Elf – an Aalfar. One of those beings that Humans had long dismissed as “fairy tales” and fantasy until more than four years ago when Portals had opened between the world of Humans and … the Other Side … the world ruled by Magic and inhabited by all of humankind's ancient fantasies and worst nightmares …
Tevis had been Kat's partner on the Corpus Christi Police Department's detective squad for nearly a year now, and more recently – her lifemate. Although they were keeping that part secret for a while yet. The CCPD officially frowned on its officers … “fraternizing.” A corner of Kat's mouth twitched a smile that quickly disappeared as she re-focused her attention on the business at hand. All the restaurant's tables were empty, all but one. She moved toward it, Tevis close at her side.
The two men standing beside the table straightened at the detectives' approach. The third man, the one slumped over his unfinished lunch, was beyond any kind of movement.
“Morales.” Corpus Christi Police Captain James Harley nodded to her, then to her partner. “Mac Leod.” He pronounced Tevis' name “Leed” instead of the way Tevis himself said it: “Lee-ud.” The other – living – Human at the table, Nueces County's Deputy Coroner Roger Branson, gave Kat and her partner a curt nod. Kat had fewer dealings with Branson than with his boss, Paul Herrera. But Paul was on vacation this week.

Kat would've bet her next paycheck that Roger was wishing his and Paul's positions were reversed.

Excerpt:
I spot his form on the outskirts. Though, I’m loathe to admit it, my night vision is better than a human’s. Energy crackles on my fingertips. Bright green sparks break the inky blackness of night. My stomach sours. Being in the same space works as an amplifier for us. I’m manifesting new powers. He’s turned me into something foreign. Physical manifestation of magic is rare and left to the most powerful.
I curl my hands into fists. He foresaw this all those years ago in that graveyard. He recognized the potential of the two of us could create together. My chest aches. Some wounds cut too deep to ever fully heal. Angers pools in my belly. I wanted love. I got lies and manipulation instead. A pulsing ball of energy forms in front of me. I’m hypnotized by the technic-color glow. How could this come from me?
I shake under the strain of maintaining it. What was created in anger is burning off my reserves.
“Let. It. Go.”
The command given in a dulcet tone snaps my hold on the newly discovered power. The ball hurtles toward him. I resend the magic, knowing the back lash of the abrupt interruption of signal flow is going to be a bitch. Lifted off my feet by a form of magical feedback, I’m pitched back violently. My stomach drops, and then I’m caught in a strong pair of arms. The gravity of seeing him in person so close up presses down on me as I drown in his chocolate colored gaze. My tongue sticks to the rough of my mouth. All thought flees as my barriers buckle like the compromised hull of a ship. The high, well-sculpted cheek bones lead down to a strong, diamond shaped jaw rounded out by a dimpled chin. His button nose gives an eternal boyish quality to his rugged good lucks. He swallows and my gaze is drawn to his throat as my mind his worked over by years of memories.

We’re exchanging information like two computers updating. He cups my face. “Louella.” I twitch as I ride the wave of power being exchanged between us.

EXCERPT:

As she stepped up to the last rack of shelves, she realized she hadn’t quite reached the end of the room. Tucked beyond the last shelf was another door—solid steel with no visible handle or lock. A web of magic crisscrossed the metal and complex runes filled four overlapping circles that shifted in a spiraling pattern.
She raised her fingers, keeping a safe several inches between her skin and the steel, and traced a glowing circle. That. She’d never seen anything quite like that before, but she knew it would react to touch. How it would react was another matter.
Intrigued, she leaned in closer, peering intently at the weaving’s underlayers as she tried to work out what it did.
“Don’t touch that.”
Lyre’s voice shattered the silence right behind her. A squeak of fright escaped her as she jerked backward from the door. But, with her sudden movement, her hand went the wrong way. And her fingers, already so close to the door, slapped against the metal.
She cringed in terror, fully expecting the door to explode or her bones to melt or her skull to burst open. Nothing happened—until she tried to pull her hand away.
It was stuck.
She yanked on her hand, but it was fused to the metal as though her skin had been superglued in place.
“I told you not to touch it.”
She shot a glare at Lyre, standing two paces away. “I wouldn’t have touched it if you hadn’t startled me!”
He tucked his binder under his arm and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Why would you touch anything in here without permission?”
“I told you—” She bit off the words. “Unkey the spell.”
“Hmm.” He rocked back on his heels and a downright evil little smirk curved his lips. “Not sure I know how.”
“What?”
“That lovely bit of work predates me. It’s pretty complicated. Since you fancy yourself a spell expert, if you look here, you’ll see—”
He started to point, and she had no idea why, but she flinched back as though he might hit her. Her elbow bumped the door—and got stuck too.
Lyre’s hand paused. “Now look what you did.”
“I didn’t—you—get me off this!”
“As I was saying, you can see here that the weaving amalgamates anything that touches it, so it’s embedded into your skin now—”
“Get me off this door!” She jerked helplessly, her immobilized wrist and elbow twisting awkwardly.
“Well, I could pull you off, but you might lose some skin. Though, since the weaving is spreading into your flesh the longer you stand there, you might leave more than skin behind.”
Her heart kicked up to a full gallop from her growing terror. He, however, seemed perfectly calm. Amused, in fact. Humor danced in his amber eyes, softening the color to something closer to buttery gold.
He was laughing at her.
“Oh.” His eyebrows rose. “That’s quite the scowl.”
She gritted her teeth. “Get. Me. Off.”
Those irresistible lips curved up and her stomach dropped to her feet. The air heated. Why was she suddenly kind of dizzy? Shadows slid through his eyes, dimming the amber to shimmering bronze.
“Get you off?” he repeated, and his tones were all purring honey, warm and deep and sensual. “With pleasure.”
A hot blush swooped through her cheeks as she realized what she’d said. “I—I didn’t mean—I was—”
In a panic, she lurched away from him—right into the spelled door.

EXCERPT:

Usually when I stepped into someone’s dreams just after they’d fallen asleep, I didn’t arrive in an active dream so much as in a place of significance in their subconscious. The kind of place they’d have recurring dreams about. As a lucid dreamer, I didn’t have true recurring dreams—deliberately conjuring dreams of my favourite places didn’t count. But I was familiar with the concept. Jen had told me that, usually, those dreams she remembered contained elements of her family home. Brad often dreamed of his grandparents’ house, where he’d spent a lot of time as a child.
That was why, when I appeared in a brightly lit department store, I raised my eyebrows. Huh. First job, maybe? I stood in an aisle full of bags of confectionary: liquorice sticks, mixed lollies, chocolate drops. But everything was slightly off. When I focused on a rustling purple and yellow packet, trying to make out the brand name, the logo slid away from my gaze as if it didn’t want to be nailed down. Price tags were illegible: smeared or written in gibberish characters. And when I looked between the packages I didn’t see a backboard filled with mounting holes but sheer, impenetrable darkness.
The darkness gaped back at me.
With goosebumps shivering along the length of my forearms, I took a moment to prepare myself, sparing a thought and a shred of energy to conjure a set of trusty motorcycle leathers. I didn’t have any such thing in the real world, but in dreams I’d found they served quite well as armour against the barbs on a blight’s tentacles. A clear-faced, round helmet made me feel like an idiot but protected my eyes. I didn’t know for certain that there was a blight here, but something was definitely not right. Even if it was just a creepy manifestation of Daniel’s subconscious—even if he was indeed going crazy—it paid to be careful. Ephemera could still have teeth.
I crept towards the end of the aisle, leather squeaking faintly as I listened for the telltale bubbling hiss of a blight. Peering past a stand of round-bellied plastic animals stuffed with jellybeans, I saw a row of unattended registers to my left. To my right, clothes swayed in a breeze I couldn’t feel. In front of me was the store’s main entrance: the roller shutter was down, allowing only a vague impression of a darkened mall beyond.
Deserted apartment stores were bloody creepy. Even ones with the lights on. Still, this didn’t look like a place a blight had trashed. Brad’s had shredded the surface of his dream, tearing holes in walls and coating everything with a mess that would do a slimy Ghostbusters spectre proud. This store was creepy, sure, but trashed? No.
Like my thought made it happen, a corner of the store went dark as one fluorescent light, then another, went out with a pop and a tinkle of glass on tile. “What the…?” I whispered, looking up.
That was when I spotted the blight.
It hung upside down from the ceiling, somewhere above the menswear section, like a deranged bat a few feet wide and made of smog. Its tentacles were jammed deep into the rectangular ceiling tiles; the tiles themselves were slick with an oily coating of blight ichor that dripped downwards, spattering across a garish display of novelty ties that hurt my eyes.
“Gross,” I said, my voice somewhat muffled behind the helmet’s faceplate. The blight turned, rotating slowly until its stained yellow eyes glared down at me.
“Oneeiiiiroi,” the creature hissed.

What is something unique/quirky about you?
I love watching horror movies. Most of the time, they make me laugh. In a way, they can be funnier than comedies. My friends, for some reason, don’t seem to share the same ideas when it comes to horror flicks. But, at least, they say that they can watch them with me because I make the films funny for them.

Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!
When I was in my 2nd year of university, studying Genetics and Cell & Molecular Biology, on the day we received the result of our 1st term’s exams. I sat there, on the plush brown chair near the Biology labs and stared at my grades on my laptop screen. It was like looking into the pit of Cs and Bs that made me question whether I was meant to be in Genetics to begin with. So, I got up, shook off the feelings of worthlessness and marched into the office of the Head of Computer Science.
Joe was a nice man who asked me a bunch of questions as to why I wanted to change majors to CS and whether or not I had enough Mathematics and Programming modules in my previous course. Apparently, I managed to get most of the prerequisites from my electives in the previous year. At the time, I wasn’t sure if I was suited for Biology or computers, which is why I wanted to make sure I could transfer at any time. By the end of it, I had to take the second term off and start my second year again in September as a CS student with fifty-eight other guys and three girls.
At the end of university, I became a writer…

Who is your hero and why?
My hero is my mother. She is a doctor with fifteen years of experience in A&E and as a family doctor.  When she moved to another country where she had to learn a new language, she had worked as a cleaner, a veterinary nurse, a homoeopathy practitioner, basically almost everything to support her family. My brother has been sickly when he was little and up until he was ten. She had spent many nights by his side, looking after him and never complaining once. She made our meals, helped me study for my finals in school, and told me to follow my dreams when I was at a crossroad in my life, which is why I was able to pursue writing as a career path.

What book do you think everyone should read?
Probably the dictionary.

What kind of world ruler would you be?
This question made me laugh. I learned that when I play games like Democracy or Civilisation, I am a good, kind ruler or president until someone starts marching their armies my way. Then, I build my military to the point where I can eliminate my enemy. So, I guess I would be a normal one? *evil laugh*

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Russian Roulette?
I’ll start off with the main characters: Helena and Lucious.
Helena grew up with a guardian angel, Michael, who’s been with her since she was seven. She had no idea about the supernatural world beyond angels since he never divulged any information to her. When it comes to the help he can provide her with, it’s limited to the point where he is not allowed to intervene with her fate.
For Helena, Russian Roulette presents a lot of new things. She’s moving out to live with her two best friends, starting college, and looking for a job on the side. As a character, she’s good-natured (to the point where it can be considered a flaw) and deeply cares for her family and friends, even though she doesn’t always say it outright.
She and Lucious are like black and white. Where she is light, he is darkness. His life experiences throughout his 156 years of existence changed him into a killer with only one goal—to find his vampire sire’s killers and avenge her. This anger and quest for vengeance have shaped his life for over a century, making him keep everyone at arm’s length, never getting emotionally involved with anyone.
Throughout the series, because of the soul-bond those two share, they change and become each other’s support. Helena’s good nature keeps Lucious in check and he makes her more cautious.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?
Only the main and secondary characters come to me before I start writing a series or a book. The rest, they tend to pop up and say, “I’m such and such. I do this because of this.”
What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?
I do research as I write a book rather than before starting it (unless it’s historical). I can never know where my characters will go and what they’ll do. So, I tend to have to pause a lot and read up on history and lore when those times come.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
Cake-loving introvert.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I enjoyed writing Russian Roulette because it gave me the freedom to explore an alternative world and see just how much I could change the supernatural beings we have gotten used to. My angels can’t interact with the people physically in the Human Realm, at least, Michael can’t. There are reasons for that ;) The demons are able to possess others, but they are more like a different species from another parallel realm rather than monsters from Christian lore. And instead of sparkling or burning in the sun, my vampires enter a coma-like state instead.
The more I dive into the universe these characters live in, the more fun I have.

Do you have any advice to give aspiring writers?
Never give up, don’t be afraid to try out new things, and believe in yourself. I don’t mean become self-absorbed or narcissistic when it comes to your work. Feedback is important, and you must take it in with an open mind. I mean that when you become an author, you are faced with a lot of uncertainty. Writing a book takes months, sometimes years. You are writing in a bubble, not knowing what people will like or think until you hand over the draft to your beta readers. Even those select few are a limited pool who have already seen your works and are used to them. So, there remains a lot of fret in the heart of a writer that shakes their confidence in their work from time to time. I don’t think there is an author who hasn’t experienced slight panic when sending ARCs of their books to reviewers and beta readers.

Georgia Pearce is with child, carrying a baby destined to begin the next generation of powerful witches. As if a mysterious prophecy and a new (dysfunctional) family wasn’t enough to deal with, all of Georgia’s hard work to rebuild her coven is ruined when witches start vanishing.

Georgia investigates, only to find that the kidnapper has ties to her lover Zak Goodwin, and is more family than foe. He has big plans to turn the planet into heaven on earth, though his idea of heaven resembles hell more than paradise. The only one standing in his way? Georgia.

As she fights to bring this dark angel down, she dives deeper and deeper into Zak’s forgotten past. The romance between them sparks and ignites, only to explode into a fire no one sees coming. Even Georgia’s powers aren’t enough to stop the evil that seeks to destroy her and her child. Has her magic finally met its match?

The most suspenseful and shocking book in the Awakening series yet, First Blood is a hot and sexy urban fantasy full of action, magic, shifters, and adventure. This paranormal romance by author Jane Hinchey is certain to leave readers breathless.
