Athena sat on the edge of the bed, going through her purse. Icarus grimaced, but went to his bag and pulled out a shirt and pair of jeans that weren't too wrinkled. Athena was right—he did need some new clothes—but he was not going shopping with her looking over his shoulder. He grabbed his shaving kit and the clothes and headed for the bathroom.

The shower was hot and worked surprisingly well. Once Icarus had finished washing, shaved, and dressed in his clean clothes, he felt much better. He came out of the bathroom to find Athena had opened his laptop and was typing away. Apparently, passwords were not a problem for ancient Goddesses of Wisdom.

"What are you doing?" he asked.

"I'm updating my Wikipedia page. Some of this information is incorrect," she replied absently.

Icarus laughed. "Don't you think they might find it odd if you add material that the modern world doesn't know about you?"

Athena pouted. "I have added it before, but they keep removing it since it doesn't have proper sources." She shrugged and closed the laptop cover. "Ready?"

"I guess so."

Athena waved a hand, and he was back in front of the bookstore. No one on the street seemed to notice his sudden appearance.

Icarus was abruptly nervous. He was not worried about the job; he was pretty sure he was more than qualified for making lattes and recommending books. Eve Gregory was the object of his concern. Petite little Eve with her golden eyes and black hair framing her oval face. Pretty, too-trusting-for-her-own-good Eve. Whatever scheme Athena had in mind also involved Eve, and that was worrisome. He straightened his shoulders, opened the door, and walked into the store.

N.W. Moors lives in Portland, Maine, the land of lobster and pine trees. She grew up in Connecticut and retired north(it's nice along the coast in winter). She's a voracious reader and avid traveler - she loves to visit Great Britain and Ireland. Researching trips meant that she tries to learn as much about the area as possible and listen to great Celtic music. She's also a knitter and hiker/walker with two cats(the cats don't walk). “So, now I’m old? Thanks.” He clicked off the phone and set it beside him on the seat. Elle gave a chuckle.

“Let’s just agree that you have a glorious past when it comes to slaying demons that has given you certain…um, insights into it that I don’t have.”

Elle watched his expression change, his eyes focusing intently on her as he smiled. Her heart began to beat a little faster. She wasn’t prepared to deal with this other, blatantly sensual part of Patrick in such close confines and moved to make more space between them.

He moved with her until their shoulders touched. “I have insights into many other things. Would you like to hear them, Elle?”

The heat of his glance and the softness of his tone made her hyperaware, her skin tingling. She cleared her throat nervously. “Sure, go ahead.”

She grew up in Altadena, California in that tumultuous time known as the 1980s. She now resides with her family in the Inland Empire, CA. Simon Masters opened the front door with a push of his hand and the house shuddered. Glass trickled down from the chandelier hanging over the foyer in a tinkling shower of shattering pieces. Plaster dust floated in the air like snowflakes. Doctor Ilsa Blaine slid around the corner from the kitchen, blood trickling from a cut on her forehead.
Every cell in his body went on alert. He shut the door with a thump and strode across the hallway, adjusting his balance for the next shattering quake shaking the room. "What happened, Doctor?"
"The sedatives aren't keeping her down anymore." Ilsa flinched as another shatter echoed from the kitchen. Simon caught her arm, steadying her. Images flashed through his mind in rapid succession, despite his gloves and her lab coat. Her anxiety levels were too high to keep them out. He shored up his shields and tried to sort through the massive influx of data.
Amanda Kincaid, also known as Rory's teammate Corkscrew, was awake. They’d rescued her a month ago from a research facility, but Ilsa's attempts to correct the damage done by a faulty chip in her brain continued to fail. Winning never felt so much like losing.
"Where are the others?"
The house shook and a splinter appeared in the doorframe. A shout of alarm echoed from upstairs. Simon canted his head back. Sweeping the house, he identified five awake minds—none Boomers or Rory's teammates. Fear seemed prevalent in the thoughts of four—but the fifth remained apathetic. Downstairs, however, Amanda's thoughts were a cyclone of pain, confusion, frustration, and rapidly escalating fury.
"Rory called in. She needed backup—” But Simon didn't hear the rest of the explanation. Amanda's chaotic thoughts grew more agitated. Setting Ilsa against the door frame, he gave her a quick glance.
Stay here. If the wood splinters further, get out. He embedded the command in her mind and dodged the falling debris in the kitchen. Since her rescue, Corkscrew's behavior grew more and more erratic. She lashed out, attacking anyone she didn't know and, unfortunately, even some she did. Rory could talk her down, Rex could contain her and Drake could take her hits—but none of those three were present. Ilsa had made the difficult decision to put her into a medically induced coma while her brain healed.
But that didn't seem to be working anymore.
The laboratory downstairs contained the latest equipment, and they’d expanded it for Ilsa's research. The Hamptons mansion doubled as their medical facility since Ilsa joined their quest for answers. Kaleidoscope

“Do you remember Emma?” Lucas asked.

“As a matter of fact, I do. It’s a pleasure to see you again.” Abe held my hand. I remembered meeting him at Ray’s auto body shop, although I could have sworn he looked different. Shorter hair, maybe?
“Nice to see you,” I answered, returning his welcoming smile.
“Lucas, did you ever meet my brother, Henrik?” Abe asked.
“Call me Henry,” he said. He shook hands with Lucas first, then reached for my hand and kissed it gently. “Very lovely to meet you, Miss Emma.” He had a hint of an accent. Even though they both looked like they were mid-twenties, Henry acted much older.
I blushed. That kind of attention might be common wherever he came from, but not here in Westport.
“You’re adorable. I didn’t mean to embarrass you, darlin’.”
Drew returned with a tray full of shots before I had time to answer Henry. After introductions, Lucas gave a toast and everyone drank back the whiskey. I didn’t want one, but I drank it anyway. Actually, I choked on it. I didn’t think any of the guys noticed until Henry put his hand on the small of my back and asked if I was okay.
“Yes. Thank you.”
When I looked up at him, I realized he had a beautiful set of ice-gray eyes. The colors were piercing. Shades of white intermixed with hints of silver and turquoise. The longer I stared, the more the hues changed. Blues faded and whites darkened. Chills ran up my arms, but I couldn’t look away. I strained to keep my eyes open despite how heavy my eyelids felt.
A tingling swept over me until I was completely relaxed.
Like a kaleidoscope, Henry’s eye colors swirled. His pupils dilated.
I closed my eyes and saw a young woman with long, brown hair running through tall grass on a sunny afternoon. I felt the warmth on my skin, tilting my head back to catch the rays. I was tired.
Was I floating?
“Emma, can I get you something to drink?” Abe asked. His hand was on my arm. Stunned, I stared up at him. Did I just fall asleep?
I shook my head quickly. “I’m okay,” I mumbled. My eyes were dry and sore, and the strange sensation, the warm, comforting feeling I had, was gone.
Did I just imagine that?

The warmth of a fire warmed my body. It relaxed my muscles, for a brief moment made me forget all the horror I had experienced in the last week and a half…

“Where am I?!” I gasped, sitting straight up. I frantically scanned the room. It was a large apartment, decked in Modern Décor. In fact, the fire wasn’t a real fire after all. It was some sort of televised wall decoration with heat radiating from it. Beside the virtual fireplace, I was perched on a black leather couch, with my leg hung up in a makeshift leg suspension. Quickly, I propped myself up on my elbows. I looked around to make sure I was alone and once satisfied, I began fidgeting with my leg sling.

“I wouldn’t touch that if I were you.”

My hands immediately froze in place. “Who’s there?” I called out, attempting to hide the fear in my voice.  When no one answered I reached for the sling. “Where are you?” I demanded, still struggling to free my foot from its new prison. “Great, finally escaped that stupid room and now I’m tied up in this place,” I muttered under my breath.

“You’re not exactly tied up,” the same voice chuckled.

At that moment I unclasped the sling. “Got it!” I exclaimed. My foot was freed and fell onto the couch. I yelped in pain and grasped my calf.

“Told you not to touch the sling.”

Still in pain, I pushed myself into a standing position. I scanned around, but once again saw that I was alone. Spotting the door, I limped my way towards the far end of the room. The smell of musky cologne tickled my nostrils, I feared my new captor was nearby. As painful as it was, I broke into a run. I reached the door in basically no time at all. I was so focused on the task at hand that I failed to question my newfound speed. Instead, I hurriedly reached for the knob only to find a hand around my wrist.

“Now, why must you insist on running after I did everything in my power to save you?”

Still facing the door, I opened my mouth to scream, but felt another hand placed over my mouth.

“Just promise not to bite,” the deep voice instructed.

She removed her hand and petted his stomach as if he were a docile panther. Simon discovered restraint he never knew he had.

About the Author
