A long, shrill scream drew Laylea back into the zoo. The guard who didn’t want to be called Beta was backing away from a tall black man in jeans, a button-down, and Fox sandals.

“Kyle!” Laylea screamed his name even as she heard KC screaming hers. “Kyle! You’re a good man! Think of Jeannie and KJ!”

The vampire looked her way. His familiar, affable smile appeared and he waved at her. “We’re just gonna have a talk. Get back to school, you reprobate.”

Then the smile melted away as though it had never been and Kyle stalked out of sight.

“Lee, come on.” KC yanked her out the entrance.

“No,” She tried to pull away but KC was strong. “I have to help him.”

“No one can help that guy now.”

Tears poured down Laylea’s face. KC was right. If Kyle had already killed a pack of werewolves, Laylea wasn’t going to be able to stop him from killing one guard. But she had to try. She hadn’t spent the last seven months hiding him from Dee and Morioka and everyone else just to give up on Kyle now. “I can.”

She yanked her arm out of KC’s grip and they both fell on the uneven steps of the plinth.

t~~op ten vacation spots~~ Top Ten Places I’ve Lived

I don’t like to vacation. I love working. If I don’t love a job, I very quickly get out of it and move on. I get my travel fix by booking jobs and moving to new places. You can tell I’ve lived all over just from reading my books. The Mobious’ Quest series takes place in Kaveg (inspired by Amsterdam), Chicago, and Denver. WereHuman is in the Pacific Northwest. The Killer on Call books have been set in a small town inspired by the many diverse college towns I’ve toured to with four productions and they’re going on the road in the next six books! Shifter School takes me back to my adopted hometown, Chicago!

I guess I can blame my Navy parents for my wanderlust. I was born in Rhode Island. Six months later we moved to Maine. Six years later we moved to Ohio. When I was sixteen, we moved to Illinois. (1 week after I got my driver’s license, I drove to Illinois and had to take driver’s ed all over again!) Once I got out of college, I really started travelling.

Here are my six favorite homes:

Amsterdam, NL! After three grueling days of auditioning, Pep Rosenfeld himself invited me to play with Boom Chicago in Amsterdam. I spent every day making people laugh. I got to work with Allison Silverman (The Colbert Report, The Unbreakable Kimmy Shmidt, Portlandia), Greg Scott Shapiro (Superburger, How to Be Orange), Peter Grosz (Late Night, Veep, The President Show), and Seth Meyers (Late Night with Seth Meyers). Plus, I got to LIVE IN AMSTERDAM! Every American should live outside of this country for a little while. I loved Amsterdam. I loved getting around on bicycle and learning a new language. I wrote much of my first book, Geoffrey’s Queen, in Amsterdam and most of the Kavegan language comes from Dutch. Kaveg MEANS Go away.
Chicago, IL I was not born there. I didn’t live there for very long. But when someone asks, I call Chicago my hometown. I lived in Rogers Park when The Matrix came out. The Wachowskis lived in Rogers Park when they wrote it! For one year, my cousin and I lived in separate studios on the same street right behind The Green Mill. Every Wednesday we went swing dancing there. One night, the band didn’t like the boys we were dancing with, so after their second set, they walked Julia and I home! It’s just a friendly town with tons of amazing experimental theater. If my mother-in-law didn’t live there, I’d move back in a heartbeat.
Harrisburg, PA I didn’t spend a LOT of time in this adorable little town with THE BEST breakfast spot anywhere. Which is extra hard to achieve when the smelliest business in town is the dog food factory. This is where we were based when I performed 14 roles in three Shakespeare-era shows with ten other actors, travelling the continent in three tiny vehicles. Shenandoah Shakespeare! A true adventure.
Kennebunk, ME Best place to spend the first six years of your life. We lived on the beach. I have probably eaten a truckload of sand. You had to hold on tight to your PB&J to keep it from the seagulls and sometimes they knocked you down. I don’t actually remember even attempting to brush off my sandwiches. Perhaps the sand is why I only eat SuperChunk peanut butter. My friends tell me about the joy of getting to go to McDonalds as a kid! My family went to the Maine Snack Bar. I’d get fried clams and French fries and then go next door for a Dilly Bar. On specialish occasions, we’d go to Shadrack and Gooch and get my idea of a happy meal. Lobster. Lobsters come with a toy too. If you take the claws off carefully, you can pull on the tendon to make the claw open and close.
Lake George, NY My first job out of college was dancing as a CanCan girl in upstate New York. The Great Escape in Lake George. An AWFUL job where I met some FABULOUS people. Upstate New York is just stunningly gorgeous but I am grateful I moved away before winter hit. The producers told me I wouldn’t need a car so I ended up rollerblading three miles to and from work every day through the Adirondack Mountains. I left that job with THE best ass.
Los Angeles, CA I moved West for Sex Signals, an absolutely stunningly funny and effective show aimed at preventing rape. I will forever be honored that I got to perform in this show with three of the most talented and passionate humans on earth. There are parts of L.A. that are exactly how you see it in movies and on TV. But there are also a hundred different little neighborhoods with their own personality. No one could explore them all. But we’ll keep working our way through the little local dives until I figure out where to go next.

I’m ready to go. LA is fun. I adore my friends here. But I’ve lived in one place for too long. It’s time to move on. Where should I go?

Gwendolyn Druyor was born at the Quonset Point Naval Air Station Hospital, North Kingston, RI. The ID bracelet wrapped three times around her little wrist. She could swim before she could walk and read before she started school.

She has traveled the world telling stories. After a year in Amsterdam writing and performing sketch comedy at Boom Chicago, she toured North America with Shenandoah Shakespeare and with the incredible educational show Sex Signals. From Paris, FR to William’s Bay, WI, you’ll find her gypsy life reflected in her books. If you met her on the road, read her closely, you may find yourself in there.

Interview:

What made you write a book about the Grim Reaper?

- Everyone has a fascination with death – normally the response to death is great fear but for some it’s curiosity. The idea of the Grim Reaper has been depicted as the scary being hiding behind a gray cloak and a scythe to just a black void. Isn’t it more fun to think of them as handsome and beautiful men and women taking you into the light?

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

- I absorb anime, other sci-fi/fantasy books and stories (including fanfiction) along with tv shows (read: Doctor Who & Torchwood). Add that with my imagination always moving and jumping around at almost every waking moment and something usually comes to be me.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

- I’m an attorney by day – in healthcare. But writing is a lot more fun.

What is the last great book you’ve read?

- I’m going to include an entire series for this question: The Lunar Chronicles series – reimagining the Cinderella story and uses an Asian protagonist. They also use one of my favorite animes “Sailor Moon” as an influence.

Do you write every day? What is writing schedule?

- I would be lying if I said every day. I have to schedule free time for writing in the same manner I would for any meeting.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

- I always find this question to be funny only because there isn’t much wiggle room for me to travel back to due to the whole slavery thing or reconstruction or Jim Crow laws. So I’d prefer to go a hundred years in the future to see how my descendants are doing.

Review:

I don't normally read a lot of YA but the blurb for this one intrigued me so I signed up to receive an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. I want to say the world building for this series was very different than anything that I've read. I am at a loss as to quite how to describe it. It was that different but I really liked that about this series. This book starts out a fast pace and keeps the action coming through out. Out of all the characters in this story Katra was my favorite. She was caring, brave, and funny. She's what my granny would call spunky. A bit naive to me but that could be me since I am considerably older that her lol

The bad guys in this book most of them were known from the get go. But as in real life there was a snake in the grass. Or more apt a serpent in the garden. I figured out who it was because it was very apparent who one of them was but one fooled me. Though he did turn out to be a good guy again in the end. This story does contain a love story between Gregor and Katra. There is no sex in this book. Plenty of violence but no sex.

I give this book four stars and will reading the next book in this series.

Cordelia awoke from her bed to a human’s scream. Was that my mom’s?! It couldn’t be.

The sound made her jump up, immediately her heart racing as she squirmed to the door. She wanted to be fearless and strong like her parents as she ran outside to find. . . Creatures that made her pause, like they’d turned her to ice. Suddenly, unlike her brave mother, she couldn’t even scream.

There were so many of them. They were unnaturally tall, some reaching the Texas’s home’s ceiling. Others even taller than that, having to bend their marble-like bodies over. Cordelia’s eyes went from one stone body to another, each monster with skin that looked so hard and unreal it shouldn’t have been able to move and breath. Yet, each creature was fully alive and mobile as they moved and barreled through her house; a home that was grand and considered, to most of their neighbors, the nicest. It had been in Cordelia’s family for many generations. She watched part of its walls crumble… Each demon-like giant flaring their fist into the foundation. WILHELM

Wilhelm only saw Abby, safe and sound for a mere second; she’d looked exactly how he remembered, so normal and innocent and yet, he knew she wasn't anymore… Then Wilhelm had felt it. Something irresistible, a gem from his world had appeared. What in all hades? Something most trolls would kill and slaughter for. So what is it doing appearing here? All his attention was pulled toward it like a cat to catnip. It was in the middle of the road, suddenly appearing in the blink of an eye as he’d watched an overgrown Halfling dive for the gem and then his Abby trying to rescue the kid and not the stone —a dumb human move considering the stone’s value over the Halfling, and so Abby. She ran into the road and he was about to watch the person who'd sentenced him to the knight world die. Yet something inside him rocked, and tore at his insides.

One moment, a truck was speeding toward her and the next, Wilhelm hadn’t known what was coming over himself. This would foolishly expose him before he had a foolproof plan, but he couldn't help it. Feeling Abby’s emotions and the emotions of every human nearby, he pushed to use it all to propel his body. He shot out fast, past all the other Halflings, past Michael who was almost about to get hit too as another like him, a Halfling named Kayla, was pulling him back and screaming franticly. All of this was going down in the blink of an eye, as Wilhelm pushed to get between the truck and Abigail, with a big vehicle coming toward his flesh.

Excerpt 2:

ABBY

Abby was still, frozen for a moment and shocked, in dangerous territory she knew, but wanting to believe his words; as if he was really on her side against everyone. She loosened for a moment as he held his lips to her own and he kissed her hard. His mouth began to move as their kiss went from frozen and awkward to suddenly wanted, and welcomed to prove that he could really be Leo, and intense.

He pulled her closer to him and growled as she let him do this and she began moving her mouth too, hungry, and raw. She held onto his warm body and kissed him back. Her tongue threatening to brush his own as his warmness was so like everything she wanted and needed to feel too, even though she knew it was wrong. The colder she grew, the more he held her and his hands came around her body, and then...

She pushed him away!

Excerpt 3:
WILHELM

All traffic seemed to come to a stop as people were screaming, and Wilhelm, right as people were coming for his motionless body, took a breath. He could feel Abby’s shock, pain, grief, and confusion at seeing him there in the road. He used it, absorbing every emotion that was going through her mind as her eyes fell on him. She could barely register that this was Wilhelm, her old friend and foe.

He only let himself look at her pale face, her beautiful tousled hair messily covering part of it, for a second. Her pouting lips and confused blue pool-like eyes. Then he propelled himself up and toward the most powerful thing he could latch onto, Trey’s dropped leafy colored stone. Wilhelm grabbed it fast from him as its pure royal magic hit him all at once in a wonderful rush, enough to heal his body without even tricking anyone as the chrysolite in his hand released tendrils of power.

He could have effected and used anyone there he wanted with it, maybe even Abby, but instead, he took off, choosing to be gone before she could say a word; including his old name.

Excerpt 4:
Abby was the only one still looking up as guests went back to dancing and demanding more caviar and ‘champs’, most of them underage. Abby's charm bracelet was rattling as, taking a step back, she accidentally stepped on someone’s foot, hard.

‘Oh sorry,” Abby said as she turned around and her eyes met a very broad tall chest. A chest that even under a white buttoned down shirt she could make out had nice toned muscles. Too nice… Abby looked up at the guy's super tall height, three buttons undone at the top of his shirt revealed some kind of markings.... Tattoos.

Her eyes took in an eagle’s mask next on his way over six foot frame, one that exaggerated perfect sharp and masculine cheek bones, and through his mask as he looked down at her... she saw bright green eyes; as green as Sofia’s necklace. Wilhelm!

“No problem. You find what you're looking for out here?” he asked sarcastically. Then he took a step closer. “Like the troll you setup to get killed tonight even after he delivered the heaven stone…” And then as other girls eyed him even as they danced with others—girls and some of the guys— suddenly, Wilhelm was grabbing Abby and pulling her close. His one hand catching her flickering wrist, stilling it; the other moving around her back as he pulled her to him, and before she could call out his name, he was spinning her into a dance.
