Book Description:

Corpus Christi, Texas, police detective Tevis McLeod, an elf, must make an impossible choice: aid the evil Queen of the Unseelie Court in a quest that will allow her to become ruler over two worlds … or watch Kat Morales, his Human partner, and lifemate, die.

Excerpt:
Kat Morales felt a tingle of nerves between her shoulders as she and her partner entered Miguelito's. Something watched them – not some one, not anyone in the knot of uniformed police and civilians gathered at the doors into the restaurant's kitchen. What burned at the nape of Kat's neck, and turned the greenblack amulet around her neck into ice so cold it almost burned, came from some … thing. A creature, definitely not Human. Kat stopped a couple of steps past the entrance, scanning her surroundings. Miguelito's had gone lavish in Christmas decorations: arrangements of poinsettias on every Spanish-tiled table in sight, bright-colored pinatas around the bar at the far end of the room, a six-pointed star of Magic-enhanced light strands hanging from the ceiling in the room's center, with more light strands radiating outward toward the walls in a simulation of starlight.
And overriding everything, the decorations, murals on the walls – everything –
That sensation prickling at the nape of Kat's neck, that feeling of being watched by something dark and malevolent.
“Invisible,” Tevis murmured, his gaze meeting hers.
Not her imagination then. He felt it too.
He nodded, as though in response to her thoughts. A couple of inches taller than Kat's own five-feet-six, hair a pale gold in color, eyes the most incredible shade of blue Kat had ever seen, Tevis Mac Leod at first glance could pass for a late-twenty-something Human. But then you noticed the ears, pointed as those of a fox, that identified him as an Elf – an Aalfar. One of those beings that Humans had long dismissed as “fairy tales” and fantasy until more than four years ago when Portals had opened between the world of Humans and … the Other Side … the world ruled by Magic and inhabited by all of humankind's ancient fantasies and worst nightmares …
Tevis had been Kat's partner on the Corpus Christi Police Department's detective squad for nearly a year now, and more recently – her lifemate. Although they were keeping that part secret for a while yet. The CCPD officially frowned on its officers … “fraternizing.” A corner of Kat's mouth twitched a smile that quickly disappeared as she re-focused her attention on the business at hand. All the restaurant's tables were empty, all but one. She moved toward it, Tevis close at her side.
The two men standing beside the table straightened at the detectives' approach. The third man, the one slumped over his unfinished lunch, was beyond any kind of movement.
“Morales.” Corpus Christi Police Captain James Harley nodded to her, then to her partner. “Mac Leod.” He pronounced Tevis' name “Leed” instead of the way Tevis himself said it: “Lee-ud.” The other – living – Human at the table, Nueces County's Deputy Coroner Roger Branson, gave Kat and her partner a curt nod. Kat had fewer dealings with Branson than with his boss, Paul Herrera. But Paul was on vacation this week.

Kat would've bet her next paycheck that Roger was wishing his and Paul's positions were reversed.

Review: Amid the Winter Snow Anthology

As the snows fall and hearths burn, four stories of Midwinter beginnings prove that love can fight its way through the chillest night…

THE DARKEST MIDNIGHT, by Grace Draven
The mark Jahna Ulfrida was born with has made her a target of the cruel and idle all her life. During the long, crowded festivities of Deyalda, there’s nowhere to escape. Until a handsome stranger promises to teach her to save herself…

THE CHOSEN, by Thea Harrison
In her visions, Lily sees two men fighting for her tiny country’s allegiance: the wolf and the tiger, each deadly, each cunning. One will bring Ys chaos and death, one a gentler path—but she’s destined to love whichever she chooses. The midwinter Masque is upon them, and the wolf is at her door…

THE STORM, by Elizabeth Hunter
When her soul mate died in a massacre of the half-angelic Irin people, Renata thought she’d never feel happiness again. She’s retreated to the snowy Dolomites to remember her hurts—until determined, irrepressible Maxim arrives to insist on joy, too. And before she can throw him out, they discover a secret the Irin have to know…

THE SNOWS OF WINDROVEN, by Jeffe Kennedy
As a blizzard threatens their mountain keep, the new Queen Amelia of the Twelve Kingdoms and her unofficial consort Ash face their own storm. Ash knows a scarred, jumpy ex-convict isn’t the companion his queen needs. But when a surprise attack confines them together in their isolated sanctuary, the feast of midwinter might tempt even Ash into childlike hope…

I want to say I love to read anthologies because it let's me read authors I haven't read and this one was no exception..

The first story in this series was a new to me author  And I loved the way it started. This one story spanned several years. If not a decade it was close. It started out with a heroine who is young and unsure and the hero was older  and wiser. But she comes into her own and they fall in love over time.

Now the second story in this book was by a favorite author. And one of my favorite series. I'm hoping that even though there was a happy for now that this wasn't the end of this particular story. If you love Thea Harrison otherworld series you need to check this one out.

I will say that the third story in this book was probably my favorite and another new to me author. I loved Renata. She was a survivor and a fighter and Maxim was a never say quit kind of guy. The world building in this story was quite different and and I think that is why I liked it so much. I most definitely will be searching out more of this author's stories.

The forth and last story was another new to me author and the world building in this one was quite interesting also. My only issue with this was that it seemed this story started in the middle and I missed quite a bit. There was definitely history there that wasn't addressed in this story. That kind of distracted from the enjoyment of this story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed and advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.  All and all this was very enjoyable anthology and I give it 4 stars and it turned me on to several new to me authors that I want to pursue further.

Katya must decide whether she values the simple and easy life she created for herself over the complex and difficult world now asking her to stand and fight.

Interview:
What made you write a book about the Grim Reaper?
-          Everyone has a fascination with death – normally the response to death is great fear but for some it’s curiosity. The idea of the Grim Reaper has been depicted as the scary being hiding behind a gray cloak and a scythe to just a black void. Isn’t it more fun to think of them as handsome and beautiful men and women taking you into the light?

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
-          I absorb anime, other sci-fi/fantasy books and stories (including fanfiction) along with tv shows (read: Doctor Who & Torchwood). Add that with my imagination always moving and jumping around at almost every waking moment and something usually comes to be me.

Do you have another profession besides writing?
-          I’m an attorney by day – in healthcare. But writing is a lot more fun.

What is the last great book you’ve read?
-          I’m going to include an entire series for this question: The Lunar Chronicles series – reimagining the Cinderella story and uses an Asian protagonist. They also use one of my favorite animes “Sailor Moon” as an influence.

Do you write every day? What is writing schedule?
-          I would be lying if I said every day. I have to schedule free time for writing in the same manner I would for any meeting.
 I
If you could go back in time, where would you go?
-          I always find this question to be funny only because there isn’t much wiggle room for me to travel back to due to the whole slavery thing or reconstruction or Jim Crow laws. So I’d prefer to go a hundred years in the future to see how my descendants are doing.

Review:

I don't normally read a lot of YA but the blurb for this one intrigued me so I signed up to receive an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. I want to say the world building for this series was very different than anything that I've read. I am at a loss as to quite how to describe it. It was that different but I really liked that about this series. This book starts out a fast pace and keeps the action coming through out.  Out of all the characters in this story Katra was my favorite. She was caring, brave, and funny. She's what my granny would call spunky. A bit naive to me but that could be me since I am considerably older that her lol

The bad guys in this book most of them were known from the get go. But as in real life there was a snake in the grass. Or more apt a serpent in the garden. I figured out who it was because it was very apparent who one of them was but one fooled me. Though he did turn out to be a good guy again in the end. This story does contain a love story between Gregor and Katra. There is no sex in this book. Plenty of violence but no sex.

I give this book four stars and will reading the next book in this series.

Review: Drakon's Plunder by N.J. Walters

SYNOPSIS:

Life is not going well for archaeologist Sam Bellamy. She’s stuck in the middle of the ocean on a salvage boat with people who want her dead. It wasn’t her gift for being able to sense objects of power that got her here, rather her need to make a secret society called the Knights of the Dragon pay for killing her mentor. Sam doesn’t believe in dragons, but the Knights do, and if she can get one of the sacred artifacts they’re searching for away from them, she’ll consider it payback.

Ezra Easton is content to run his marine salvage company and live alone on his private island. He may be a four-thousand-year-old water drakon, but he’s civilized enough to know just because he pulls an injured woman from the ocean, doesn’t mean he gets to keep her...

When she wakes up, she has a few tall tales to share, and it seems the Knights are after her. But this drakon won’t give up his treasure.

EXCERPT:

Ezra was in his human form about twenty feet from the boat, trying to decide on the best way to sneak onboard, when he first caught sight of the woman creeping along the port side. With his preternatural vision, he could see perfectly. It was obvious she was trying to hide. She had a black wool hat pulled down over her head, was swathed in a large dark coat, and moved furtively along the deck, keeping to the shadows.

He glanced at the bow of the ship where the lone guard stood, cigarette in hand. Ezra had circled the boat twice already, and this seemed to be the only man keeping watch outside.

Who was the woman, and what was she doing?

His dragon stirred inside, wanting him to move closer. He glided until he was only about fifteen feet away. She glanced over her shoulder, but he knew she couldn’t see him in the dark.

He watched while she untied the rubber dinghy and dropped it into the water. Was she leaving? Curiosity piqued, he drifted closer and watched her frantically trying to find the paddle. He sensed her relief when she finally found it. Seconds later, she began to paddle.

A spotlight came on, shining right at the dinghy. Ezra managed to duck beneath the waves and swim into the shadows before it caught him in its glow. By the time he surfaced, a man was standing on the deck with a gun pointed at the woman.

A slow anger began to burn inside Ezra.

“You didn’t really think I bought the whole story about there being nothing in the urn but a necklace, did you, Sam?”

To give the woman credit, she didn’t stop paddling. “You wanted gold, Aaron. Now you have some. That necklace is worth a small fortune.”

“But it’s nowhere near as valuable as what you have in your pocket.” He laughed when her hand went to her jacket. “I knew the second you went back to the lab. There’s nowhere on this ship you can go without me knowing about it. Now stop.” He fired a shot that landed just in front of the dinghy. Sam set the paddle down on the floor of the boat.

“I can’t let you have this.”

Ezra could tell the woman was terrified but was trying to appear brave. He wondered what she had that was more valuable than gold. Whatever it was, it was probably what he’d come here to retrieve.

She pulled a small plastic bag from her pocket and opened it. The angle she held it at made it impossible for Ezra to see what was inside. The man on deck began to swear. “Don’t do anything stupid,” he warned her. “We can talk about this.”

She laughed, but there was no humor in it. “I’ve always known you planned to kill me. Just like you killed Brian.”

“Who the hell is Brian?” the man demanded.

She held the open bag out over the rim of the dinghy, perilously close to the waves. “Brian was my mentor. He was the only family I had. Well, you can all rot in hell before I’ll give you this book. If I can’t have it, no one can.”

What had Ezra stumbled into? A power play among members of the Knights? Those in the lower ranks of the society frequently jockeyed for position, often killing one another to move upward. There was little honor among them.

He didn’t like thinking that about the woman, but he didn’t know what else to believe. His dragon didn’t like her talking about another man, even if she spoke of him as though he was family. He struggled to keep the creature in check and stay in his human form. Now was not the time to shift. Not yet.

“Come on, Sam,” the man called Aaron cajoled. “We can work this out. There’s no reason for you to do this.”

“I can’t.” She shook her head and looked resigned.

“That’s really too bad.” Aaron raised his weapon.

Ezra realized what he was about to do and rocketed through the water, shifting on the fly. His dragon became a living torpedo with a single target.

A shot rang out just as he rammed the Integrity. He heard men yelling as the boat shuddered and shook and began to take on water from the huge hole in the bow. Ezra circled and rammed the ship again, this time driving it onto its side.

He used his powerful wings to propel him underwater and back to the side of the dinghy. It had also taken on water when the bigger vessel faltered. The woman—Sam—lay on her side on the bottom of the small boat, blood mixing with the seawater puddled around her.

There was no time to waste. He grabbed the line from the dinghy in his mouth and began to swim, cutting through the water. He had no idea how badly she’d been wounded. He wasn’t even quite sure why he cared, but he did.

He couldn’t let her die. He needed to know more about her, why she was with the Knights, and what was in that bag she’d been holding.

REVIEW:

I have been reading Ms. Walters books for a while and haven't had the pleasure of reading this series. Not sure how I missed it since I like her books and I love dragons. These dragons are not your normal dragons and have an interesting back story.  Of course since  I started reading this series in the middle I am going to have go read the first two. Good thing I already have one of them in my to be read pile.

Sam was my kind of heroine. She is intelligent, brave and a take no crap kind of girl. I liked her a lot She would make a great bestie. And Ezra even though he older than dirt lol he is not caveman kind of guy. He is protective and alpha to the bone but he's not an asshole about it.  I did like his powers He can fly and he can swim. Man can he swim. I believe this is first time I've read a book about a water drakon and I liked it.

My only issue with this book was that it kind of ended abruptly. It had a happy for now with Sam and Ezra but kind of left the story hanging. You don't know what the Knights were doing and Sam was kind of left in limbo what with them hunting her. I'll definitely be reading the next book to see the resolution. I give this book 4 stars and was given this book via Netgalley in consideration of a review which in no way influenced my opinion.

Book #2 Hunter's Moon
Book #3 Blood Moon
Book #4 Harvest Moon
Book #5 Ice Moon
Book #6 Blue Moon
Book #7 Wolf Moon
Book #8 New Moon

Review:
This is the first book in this this series.that I've read. Now I'm upset because I have to read the rest of them lol. I really liked this book and am interested in learning about the other folks in this story. I also had no issues reading this book before reading any of the others. It was very well done so that this story stood on its on. I was happy about that.

Not sure what Sebastian had done in prior books since I've not read them so I wasn't predisposed to dislike him. He seemed somewhat conflicted but in the end he not only chose sides he chose the right one. Any side that harms women and children is the wrong one in my opinion. My only regret was that he had to kill his father. Not that I regret he was killed because that man needed killing. I just regret that Sebastian had to be the one who did it

Isabelle was my type of heroine honest, strong, brave, and as my granny would say spunky. I believe this is the first time I've read a shifter book where a shifter found their mate by trying to kill them.  I liked that she didn't let him leave her out even though he tried his level best to protect her She wasn't having it.

I give this book 4 stars and was given this book by via Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review and this is no way influenced my opinion.

Review: Fire Brand by Diana Palmer

Fire Brand by [Palmer, Diana]

He'll risk his whole heart to save her from the past
Gaby Cane was always a bit afraid of her attraction to Bowie McCayde. Even when she was fifteen and Bowie's family took her in, she had sensed his simmering resentment. Now ten years later, she's an aspiring journalist who can hold her own with any man professionally, the dark shadows of years gone by far behind her. Then Bowie strides back into her life—only this time, he needs her, and the pull of loyalty to his family is too strong to ignore.
When Bowie asked Gaby to help save his family's Arizona ranch, he never expected the girl he once knew to return transformed into a stunning, successful woman. As they work together, Bowie is shocked to find that her innocence and beauty stir a hunger he can't deny. But the rogue rancher can sense something holding her back, and he's determined to uncover the terrible secret Gaby is fighting to keep hidden

I won't say how long I've been reading Diana Palmer books suffice to say its been a long long time. Her stories are always a great romance story with angst, conflict, and most of all love. This one is no different.

But I did notice a one big difference in this book. The hero wasn't as much of an ass as some of her others have been. And the heroine Gaby maybe innocent but she holds her own. Seems like we got both their points of view more in this one that we have in the past with Ms Palmer's books and I liked that. Her books are an auto buy for me and I love that I can share them with my aunt and SIL.

This book gets 4 stars from me and I was given this book via Netgalley in consideration of a review and that in no way influenced my opinion of this book. If you like sweet romances try hers. You can buy this one here.

Review: Lost Summer by M.T. Stone

Stole Her Innocence And Then She Vanished, So Everyone Blamed Me.Now I’ve Been Given A Chance To Save Her…  Hopefully It’s Not Too Late!

Dylan

We had the time of our lives and I finally stole her innocence.  Then someone stole her.  Now I’m stuck in the hot seat, being grilled under the bright lights.  Sitting here, all I can think about is going out there and finding her.  At this point, however, it’s going to take a miracle just to get out of jail.  Unfortunately, I’m not the type who attracts miracles or even luck for that matter.

Carson
Olivia Bennett is the only woman I’ve ever loved, but I lost her after choosing the Marines over college.  Now her daughter is missing and the blame has been pinned on my only nephew.  With twenty years of military and DEA experience, I know I can hunt down the bastard who took her and bring her back alive.  If I succeed, it will heal some old wounds with my family and give me another shot at winning back the woman of my dreams.

Summer
I return to consciousness face down on a stinky piece of cheap, prickly carpet.  My head is pounding.  I can’t open my eyes.  I try to move my arms, then my legs, but both are tightly bound.   All I hear is the sound of tires humming against the pavement.  I try to scream, but my lips are pressed so tightly together that I can barely muster a moan.  My mind goes blank as I scramble to think of any way to improve my odds.  I have no idea where I am, where I’m headed, who has taken me or why?  My heart races out of control as tears soak the blindfold that relentlessly keeps me in the dark.  I find myself spiraling into utter despair.
**Lost Summer is a full-length (92,000 words) stand alone Romantic Suspense with No Rape Scenes, No Cheating and No Cliffhanger.  If you like a fast-paced book that you can’t put down, you will love this one!

Review:

Not sure where or how I first became aware of this book but the cover certainly got my attention at the beginning and then I read the blurb and I had to read it. Luckily for me at the time it was a free read so I one clicked it. I had other books that I wanted to read but this one had grabbed me so I read it and I wasn't disappointed. This book was an attention grabbing fast paced rocket ride to the finish.

I'll preface my next thought with I don't normally read YA or NA a lot and this one was a NA and it showed. Some of the ways the hero and heroine thought or did things was WTH hell moments for me but as I said that was probably me since I'm considerably older than they are. Actually my kiddos are a little older than them lol. The story and writing were excellent and I'll definitely be keeping my eyes out for more stories by this author.

As I said I got this book on my own and I give it 4 stars. So if this one grabs you the way it did me go and one click It's still a bargain at $.99.

Review: Rescued by the Space Pirate by Nina Croft

SYNOPSIS:

A few days ago, in a galaxy right here…
The earth faces total annihilation and one young woman signs up for a mission to rescue humanity. Only she ends up getting rescued herself, by a gorgeous space pirate. And the sex is out of this world!
Hopeless romantic, Ruby Robbins spends her days as an accounts clerk, and her nights with her head in the stars, dreaming of space adventures in the arms of an alien…or two. Then one day, she’s approached to help her country by going undercover…in space! She jumps at the chance and before she knows it, she finds herself in the cargo hold of an alien slaver ship.
Space pirate, Killian Sharpe owes a lot of money to some very bad people. So when an anonymous employer offers him a tidy sum to extract one Ruby Robbins from a slaver ship, it sounds like easy money. But once he sets eyes on Ruby, he knows he’s in over his head. Not only is she breathtakingly beautiful—she refuses to be saved.
Luckily Killian hasn’t met a woman yet who could hold out against him for long…

Scifi Romance is my very favorite genre and this one was a fun sexy read. The world building was intriguing and though I admit I don't usually read books with cliff hangers this one intrigued me and I just had to read it. I will say the heroine disappointed me a bit. She was brave and fearless but not very bright IMO. The hero was sexy, smart, and interesting.  This book left his story a little bit vague for my taste but this could be because this is not the sum total of the story. And darn it I am most definitely looking forward to more Zak.

I give this story 4 stars. And I can't wait to read the next two stories. I was given this book in exchange for consideration of a fair and honest review.

Review:Her Darkest Nightmare by Brenda Novak

Her Darkest Nightmare

Book 1
The Evelyn Talbot Chronicles

Release Date: August 30, 2016
THE HUNT FOR A SERIAL KILLER
Evelyn Talbot knows that a psychopath can look perfectly normal. She was only sixteen when her own boyfriend Jasper imprisoned and tortured her―and left her for dead. Now an eminent psychiatrist who specializes in the criminal mind, Evelyn is the force behind Hanover House, a maximum-security facility located in a small Alaskan town. Her job puts her at odds with Sergeant Amorak, who is convinced that Hanover is a threat to his community…even as his attraction to beautiful Evelyn threatens to tear his world apart.
BEGINS WITH AN ESCAPE FROM HER PAST
Then, just as the bitter Alaskan winter cuts both town and prison off from the outside world, the mutilated body of a local woman turns up. For Amorak, this is the final proof he needs: Hanover has to go. Evelyn, though, has reason to fear that the crime is a personal message to her―the first sign that the killer who haunts her dreams has found her again. . .and that the life she has so carefully rebuilt will never be the same….
This series is very dark and not so much a love story as maybe the very beginning of one. And not an auspicious beginning at that. This is the second book in this series and if you like dark and twisted fiction then this is your series. If you are fascinated by serial killers then this is your series. If murder and mayhem is not your cup of tea this probably won't do it for you.  I picked up this series because though I am intrigued with reading about series killers I prefer fictional ones not reading about true crime history of the real ones.

Sergeant  Amarok and Evelyn have to find the serial that is hunting in their town.  Evelyn thinks it is Jasper and that he is tormenting her. Amarok is not so sure he just know that Hanover House brought this to his town. Things are not always what they seem in this story and not all the killers are locked up or who you think they are. Evelyn has to learn this lesson the hard way. But this book does have not so much a HEA but a hopeful for now.

I give this book 4 stars and I bought it with my own hard earned money.
