Seven Reasons to go with a Novella

I love novellas, but I realize that not everyone has discovered the charm of shorter works. Common complaints are that if you’re going to pay for a book, you want something significant to show for what you’ve bought. Or, maybe, you just haven’t had a lot of success finding authors who can tell an entire story in a novella-length. Possibly you’ve been burnt on cliffhangers or teasers. Don’t get me started on the mid-series novella with thirty characters appearing in thirty pages. I shake my fist at them and consider throwing my Kindle. But…but…let me offer a few good reasons to give novellas a shot.

1.      Seasonal or theme treats. Anthologies or novella standalones often revolve around a holiday or theme. While you’re baking cookies, you can page through a novella that’ll get you in the mood for the upcoming holiday and won’t leave you with charred cookies. Also, some themes would feel tired over the course of an entire novel. I’ve written a horror novella that there’s no way I could have sustained the emotions through three hundred pages.
2.      Find new authors. Novellas are the perfect chance to sample new authors without committing days and days to it. If you’re one of those people who can’t DNF (did not finish) a book, then novellas can be a saving grace for you. Novellas are auditions for longer works that are greater monetary or time investments.
3.      Sleepless but not hungover. You’ve finally finished that project. You even did a load of dishes. Everyone is in bed…but it’s after ten p.m. You could pick up that novel on your bedside table, but the last time you did that, you finished it at 6 a.m. and had a book hangover. Novellas are the perfect wind-down reading that don’t tie you down. You might be up until midnight, but you’re not greeting the dawn while thinking, “Just one more chapter.”
4.      Mini-adventures and micro-trips. Most readers love the opportunity to dive into a fictional world and be there. They can have the thrill of a far-off place or a magical realm while snuggled into an armchair with a bowl of soup. If the average adult reads five books a year, then that’s five mini-vacations via fiction. Novellas give you the chance to double that or more. Think of all the places you’ll go and lives you’ll live! There’s your day at the beach on lunch breaks in February. Your Christmas in July while watching swim lessons. Trek through the rainforest while commuting home. I’m a prolific reader, and I need my two hundred vacations to make up for the time I spend paying bills and doing laundry.
5.      Mooooore. With the ease of digital releases, many authors are putting out interim novellas in between novels. Sometimes, it’s an epilogue or prologue type of contribution to a series so readers can find out more about the world and characters. Sometimes, it’s a story that is close to the author’s heart but not as easily marketable like a holiday story. Readers can get their grabby hands on more work by their favorite authors.
6.      They boldly go everywhere. As an author, I can tell you that novellas are great for more diverse and interesting “what if” scenarios. For a while, “trapped in an elevator” romances were big and I read quite a few of them. The novellas were far better than the novels in my experience. There was a flash-bang feel to the novellas. They had an encapsulated magical meet-cute squishiness that I loved. In the novels, it was a scene in a greater plot and the remainder of the book often didn’t have as much appeal.
7.      The intensity. Good novellas can’t drag. A well-written shorter work doesn’t waste time building character depth through their cereal choices. The reader is plunged right into the story or into the relationship. The writing has to be tighter and the emotions often tug at more universal conflicts. There’s no drawn-out backstory. There’s this moment, this scene, and it’s all on the line.

Stealing Time was intended to be a single novella when I wrote it…but I couldn’t stay away from the world. Readers couldn’t either. This was the story that I was contacted about regularly. “Loved Stealing Time, but when are you going to write the rest of the series?” Writing a seasonal paranormal novella already felt like a risk to me and that’s even without acknowledging there really isn’t a category for “Father Time’s sons” romance on retail sites. I put off readers for a bit, but eventually I couldn’t resist. The novella length gave me the opportunity to take this chance with Stealing Time and then its two sequels. I hope you’ll give them a chance too.

Excerpt:

“What are you doing to me?”
“What do you think I’m doing?”
She glared at him. Saying it out loud would sound utterly stupid. “I keep having these lapses of time. One minute, I’m in one place and, the next, I’m in another. And four times now, I’ve seen you walking away from me when it’s happened.”
“So, you’re accusing me of doing something to your memory? Or of stalking you?” He took another sip of his drink as if he was only mildly interested in her response.
She opened her mouth to say something before snapping it closed. What was she accusing him of? It all sounded silly and impossible, and he’d be around this whole week. Every time they saw each other, she’d feel humiliated that she’d actually thought…
Oh, who cared? She was going to get brain cancer from all this testing if she couldn’t get to the bottom of things.
“You’re doing something to time. I don’t know what you’re doing, but I don’t think your name is just an odd little coincidence.”
For a blink, she saw something in his eyes and a quick half-smile. “It’s a family name.”
“So, your entire family manipulates time?”

Release Blitz and Interview: Illicit by Cathy Clamp (A Novel of the Sazi)

When a border dispute between two bear clans destabilizes shapeshifter relations throughout Europe and threatens to reveal their existence to humans, the Sazi High Council orders both sides to the negotiation table. The peace talks take place in Luna Lake, the American community where all shifter species–wolf, cat, bird, bear, and more–live in harmony.
Diplomats, their families, and security personnel stream into town, among them Dalvin Adway, a Wolven agent. Dalvin is startled to find Rachel Washington in Luna Lake. The last time he saw her, they were children in Detroit. Then she was kidnapped and, he thought, murdered. But Rachel became an owl-shifter as a result of the attack and has avoided family and old friends ever since, knowing they would not understand her . She’s stunned to see Dalvin and learn that he, too, is an owl-shifter.
Their wary friendship is on the brink of becoming something more when conspiracy and betrayal cause the peace talks to break down. The fight between the bear clans will be settled through a form of traditional challenge–a risky tactic that might lead to full-blown war. Rachel is determined to prevent that, even if it means taking up the challenge herself!

Interview:

Q: How did you do research for your book?
A: Research for the books is always one of my favorite parts of writing! When I decided to update the series, I really thought hard about where people would go to be protected from snakes. I looked all over the country for big swaths of land where predators could hunt and not be noticed. Washington State was ideal! Not only is eastern Washington sparsely populated, there are Native American reservations nearby that could have been ancestors of the Sazi.  As I start to write, I often have to look up strange little things.  In the November 1st release, ILLICIT, I didn't know much about either owls or bears, but they were the primary characters!  I did everything from reading about characteristics (food, shelter, personalities) and watched videos of them hunting for inspiration. One scene shows two of the bears "fighting" and it's the heroine, Rachel, who notices that they aren't showing their gums when they bite or shaking the other bear, so they're probably just wrestling for fun. Without researching, I would have never known that!

Q: Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
A: Oh, everywhere! I especially like archaeology magazines. There's so much being discovered every day about the past and mysteries are on every page. One thing that really caught my eye years ago was archaeologists who discovered a temple that was built on top of another temple, and another and another. At the bottom, they discovered a very small room that was sealed. The outside of the room was entirely painted with red ochre. Why? What could possibly be so special to have so many layers and be painted red (which is no small feat by hand!) It became my inspiration for the Quetzalcoatl (winged serpent) that became the villain in SERPENT MOON, the final book of the original Sazi series.

Q: Do you have another profession besides writing?
A:  I do! I'm actually a real estate paralegal for a title company. I dearly love the legal field and real estate is another source of my inspiration for books. There are so many stories and schemes told in the form of deeds and corrections. Very fun stuff!

Q:  Do you write every day?
A: Actually, no. I'm what I call a "binge writer." I simply can't get into the story with only an hour or two to write. I literally sit down and write for 8-10 hours when I finally do. So, I tend to write on the weekends, since I have a day job.

Q:  Favorite meal?
A:  Spaghetti and meat balls! No question. I would have it every day given the choice. LOL!

Q: What’s the funniest thing that ever happened to you?
A:  The funniest thing that ever happened to me was meeting my husband of 28 years. He was working as a cook at a restaurant in the town where I lived, and my roommate worked a different shift at the same restaurant.  One of the waitresses on the morning shift quit and she asked if I could fill in for the person. I really hadn't ever worked as a waitress before but said if it was okay with the managers, I'd take a swing at it. They were happy just to have a warm body in the position for the day (and frankly, I wasn't much more THAN a warm body! LOL!) The whole morning, I felt like everyone was talking about me behind my back. It was really starting to annoy me so I decided to take my lunch period and calm down. The cook came in to the break room and closed the door. He told me that he was the reason everyone was whispering. Apparently, they had all decided that we would make a perfect match!  It was the first time I'd literally talked to him, since he'd been cooking. He apologized and said he would do his best to tell people to shut up. He was also annoyed because he thought everyone was being childish. We got to talking and it turned out that everyone was RIGHT! We had everything in common. He asked me out by the end of my lunch hour and we've been together ever since! Love at first sight really happens and sometimes other people can spot it before you do.  :D

I hope you all enjoy ILLICIT, which is a very similar tale of love at first sight that just won't go away. Thanks for letting me drop by!

You are very welcome and if this sounds like something you'd like to read you can go here and purchase it. Me personally I love The Sazi books and I've read everyone of them. This one is next up to read as soon as I've finished my current read.

EXCERPT:

Chapter One

Cara looked at the man sitting hunched behind the table and hesitated. Even in his human form, she could see the lynx within him. Gray and white whiskers hung long from the sides of his compressed mouth, twisting into two braided spindles. His large, pointed ears twitched at the tips in annoyance.
“What could you possibly have to trade?” His voice was low and scratchy.
She clutched the sage-green and gold silk in her hands. All she had to offer was a headscarf, and with it, the last remaining essence of her mother. The lynx was one of the last people in all of Sajra she wanted to give up her mother’s scarf to, but she didn’t have a choice. He was the only vendor in the marketplace who traded with panthers, and she had two other mouths to feed at home. She needed the meat.
“Well?” he pressed.
Cara brought the shimmering material to her nose and inhaled. Hilisha flowers and honey. The scent of her mother. Before her face could appear in Cara’s thoughts and bring the familiar heartache with it, she thrust the scarf at him.
“It is made with gold thread. The beads are real crystal, too,” she muttered. “It was my mother’s Hunt headdress…a gift from my father the night of their bonding.”
The man snatched it from her grasp and examined the fabric between his curved fingers. He murmured to himself, the corner of his lips curling in a satisfied smirk.
For the first time since Cara had arrived in his tent, the tension in her muscles eased. Since food was hard to come by these days, the forest almost picked clean of any prey by hunting groups, meat was precious and rare. Especially for her kind. If she got some bison meat, or even a small buck for the scarf, she could make it last a month.
“The scarf is made very well,” the old lynx began. His mouth split into a full grin. “However, I’m afraid I can only give you this for it.” He reached under the table and pulled out a small mound wrapped in brown paper and string. It was slightly bigger than Cara’s closed fist.
Cara picked it up and peeked through the opened corner. Her heart dropped. “Rabbit.”
“No one will want to buy anything that has been owned by a panther,” the lynx explained with a shrug of his hunched shoulders. “I will be lucky if I can sell this at all.”
Cara’s hands shook as her anger built. A small piece of lean meat for her mother’s handmade scarf? It was completely unfair—crooked, even. “That is real gold thread! It is worth much more than a slab of rabbit and you know it!”
He tilted his chin and waved to shoo her out. “That is all I can offer you. Take it or leave with the worthless cloth. I don’t care either way.”
A growl rumbled in her throat, and her nails sharpened into claws. He was just like everyone else who lived at the head of Sajra’s river—an ignorant, heartless brute that judged her kind based solely on rumors and lies.
As much as she wanted to throw the packaged rabbit in his face, she couldn’t. Meat was meat, as lean and puny as it was. Her family still needed to eat.
Cara took a deep breath to settle her fury and the tingling power of the change. She pulled the rabbit closer to her chest and nodded. “Deal,” she said, her throat tight.
“Good.” The lynx sneered. “Now, get out of my tent before someone sees you and I lose business.”
She whirled and pushed through the tent’s opening. “Dirty rat,” she spat over her shoulder loud enough for him to hear.
Out of the protection and the darkness of the vendor’s tent, Cara pulled the hood of her cloak up to mask her face. Her gaze swept over the marketplace. The whistling of pipes and the roll of drums sent an energetic pulse through the cluttered circular space. At the far side, a group of musicians played their instruments with mischievous grins as they watched girls dressed in long, swaying dresses dance to the music they created.
Crouching low, Cara slipped into the shadow of two merchant tents, her steps silenced by the roar of excited voices. People in both human and animal form passed by in front of her like a river current, telling jokes, drinking, and bartering their goods away. Tents and tables surrounded a tall stone statue of Sajra, their mother and the creator of their kind. Beside the flowing train of her robes, a sculpted lion and tiger rested. Sajra’s hands lay upon the animals’ heads. Colorful fabrics and glittering treasures decorated the place at her naked feet.
Cara’s eyes rested on Sajra’s marble face. Her hollowed-out stare traveled the length of the city’s winding river. She couldn’t help but feel a great sadness when she looked upon the statue. Surely Sajra hadn’t planned for one of her children to be treated with such hatred and cruelty. She was supposed to love them all the same. Or at least, Cara liked to think that way.
Her grandmother, Ryna, spoke often of a time of peace between the species, a golden era where love was plentiful and hierarchy did not exist. The tale always started with the same phrase: “It was long ago when the lions ruled.” The lions had been so wise and kind to all of Sajra that the people titled them the Nobles. Cara, though, knew nothing about nobility or the lion shifters. They had died out almost half a century ago.
The tigers’ reign was all Cara knew—their push into royalty and their blind eye to the ones below them. The rei and regis’s selfish ways were the reason Cara and her sister had been orphaned so young.
Cara swallowed down her anger and sorrow, but it stayed in a thick knot in the center of her chest. She would never forget the look in their cold, golden eyes as she begged for the medicine to save her parents, and their response was to have their guards pluck her from the throne room. The gaurds carried her out kicking and clawing. “Panther filth,” they had called her. “Thief!” The tigers cared nothing for her dying mother and father, for Cara, or any of their kind.
Cheers and applause erupted from the center of the marketplace, jerking her from the memory. In front of the monument of Sajra, a wooden dais sat draped in billowing burgundy curtains. A crowd had gathered at its base.
Curious, Cara stepped out of the shadow and stood on her toes for a better look.
Rei Salus was the first to appear above the group. Two tall leopard guards took his side. Even in his old age, his cheekbones were high and sharp. His nose was long, and curved down over his gray-tinted mustache and invisible top lip. Thinning black hair was the only unruly thing about the man. It stuck up in all directions like high river grass. Despite the late spring’s heat, the rei wore red and gold robes that hung in thick folds across his spare body. If she moved closer, she knew she would see that his hands were spotless and that every fingernail gleamed. She scoffed. This man had never worked a day in his life.
“People of our beloved city of Sajra!” Rei Salus held up his hands to settle the noise. The crowd quieted. “Centuries ago, Sajra, our mother, was murdered by Maurus, the gray wolf spirit. Through her death, we were granted life. Her great love for us allowed her spirit to multiply into the many powerful species that make up our city today. We celebrate this union, and our history, annually with the Hunt.”
There was a burst of excited cries.
Cara rolled her eyes. Like the rei knew anything about love.
“By the end of the week, mates will be chosen to run in the ceremonial race. These couples will be blessed by Sajra with happiness, fertility, and eternal love.”
A young man, one Cara had never seen before, stepped onto the dais. He matched the guards in height but doubled their size in bulk. He wore a tunic of brown leather that was cut off at his shoulders and ended at his hips. His trousers matched the tan color of his skin and were tucked into his high boots. Thick, rippling muscle sculpted his exposed arms, and a belt wrapped around his lean middle. A tense hand rested on a sheathed dagger that hung from it.
When his broad shoulders turned, and he faced the audience below, Cara’s breath caught. He was beyond handsome. Sweeping dark hair framed his face. It curled around his ears and at the start of his strong jaw.
But the more Cara searched his features, the more similarities she found between this tense stranger and the rei standing beside him—the two brooding amber eyes under black brows, the narrow nose, the distinct curve of the cheeks. Her heart dropped.
“This year, my son, Kael, will be participating in the Hunt and will choose his regis,” Rei Salus continued, gesturing to the powerful young man.
Cara’s stomach twisted. Had she really been ogling the tiger prince?
Kael’s stern expression still didn’t waver as the attention shifted to him. As the rei continued to speak about the upcoming Hunt, Cara stepped closer to the tent, covered again by shadow. She should get back to the village, to Ryna and Alina, but something inside her wanted to stay. With her gaze locked on the stage, she forced her feet to take a step back. Then another.
Up and down her back, her skin prickled. Her muscles tensed. Someone was behind her, and not too far away. The rising volume of voices from the crowd made it difficult for Cara to listen for any hints of who it may be. Friend or foe? She lifted her nose and sniffed. Hidden underneath the distinct, heavy smells of the marketplace—burning incense, sweat, and smoky fires—was the faint, crisp scent of mint leaves.
Then, she heard several light cracking sounds, like twigs breaking underfoot. Before she could turn her head, something too small to see in its speed blew past her face, whistling through the air. She tried yelling a warning to the dais, but the words weren’t even on her tongue before Rei Salus was gripping his chest. His face twisted in terror, and his knees collapsed under him. The leopard guards reached out, grasping his arms as he fell to the floor.
Many people in the crowd dropped to the ground, covering their heads. Others screamed and ran into the safety of the canvas tents. With the space cleared, Cara could see more of the stage. The rei’s body twitched and jumped like a fish taken from water. White, foamy bubbles leaked from his nostrils and the corners of his mouth. Kael, the tiger prince, fell to his father’s side and ripped something out of his chest. As he held it up to examine it, Cara saw a slender wooden tube with a needle-like nose. It was a dart of some kind.
“He’s been poisoned!” Kael shouted to the guards. His voice was as menacing and powerful as his appearance. Rei Salus’s thrashing continued. Every second seemed to drag on as the crowd watched in silent horror. Cara couldn’t look away, either.
Then, a terrible gurgling sound spewed from his mouth, and he stilled, lying like a puddle on the dais. One of the leopards reached down and pressed his fingers against his neck.
“The rei…He is dead,” he said.
The prince looked at the dart again, his rage making his eyes glow. Then, his focus moved to something else, something beyond the weapon. A fierce growl tore from his throat as his and Cara’s eyes locked.
Her gut lurched as realization hit her.
“You!” he roared, throwing the dart down and pulling the dagger from his belt. “Panther!”

Cara was running before the word left his mouth.

Interview:

1.      How did you do research for your book?

For the Relek City series, I attended a police academy for writers. It was AMAZING, and ran the full gambit of public services and procedures—some of which got to be immediately applied to my draft at the time.  (Indeed, any inaccuracies in my books from all that learning is a result of me spinning things as it fits the more dystopian Relek City world.)  I learned that certain scenes I wanted to write would have resulted in my characters' deaths—and how to keep them alive instead.

2.      Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

EVERYWHERE!

3.      Do you have another profession besides writing? What is it?

I am a copy editor for other authors, and format manuscripts for ebooks and print on the side.  After a year of freelancing I'm also back to being a full-time technical writer.  For the day job, I write software manuals, test computer programs, and basically serve as an interpreter between programmers and people who use their products.

4.      Do you write every day? What’s your day like?

Things have changed recently—the kidlet is now in school!  I do write every day, but some days it's new stuff, some days it's fun stuff, and some days it's revisions—which take much longer and can be much more grueling.  I spend 4 hours a day in my books, and then the rest of my work day is split between various platform tasks: blog tour content, social media conversations, hanging out with my street team, researching for a book or for the business side of the writing world, and designing newsletters.  With a day job, the time to work gets quite cramped—so I do a lot of planning to make sure I hit mini-deadlines as well.

On days when I'm authoring instead of working as an editor or technical writer:

1.      I spend my morning going over the school day with the little one, getting her ready and her brain working.
2.      After returning from the bus stop hike, I breakfast. (And also remove the new kitten from where she is sitting inside one of my big plants, trying to eat all the leaves.) If I didn't get sleep the night before because someone had nightmares, I take a nap. :D  And then it's coffee time.
3.      Email, and a smidge of social media. I clear my to-reply list for marketing events and content, reply to some fanmail, then congratulate myself with an exercise break.  Which is usually dancing. Badly. ;)
4.      With my brain juiced up from energy and all the non-fic types of writing cleared out, my muse usually turns on and I get a good hour of writing without interruption—and it's lovely.
5.      Then there's lunch.
6.      My muse goes to sleep after food so it's a good time for me to work on more business stuff—like the research and moneydollars number crunching—unless I'm in revisions.  If we're talking revisions, my inner editor is raring to go.
7.      Bus stop pick up of the little one!  Then it's back to the writing, while she's snacking and doing her homework.  Since I don't do coffee after 2, I race against my previous day's numbers and pull out all stops to get a bit of extra juice at the end of the day.
8.      When the alarm for work-over goes off, we start prep work for dinner.  Hopefully, that's just sides to go with the slow cooker or casserole, and I've planned a dish that can cook while we clean and take care of the other chores—because if not, then whatever I've brilliantly decided to slave over will be burned and inedible.  I don't...stove...well. ;)
9.      Dinner, little's bedtime routine, yoga, then I get to catch up on TV shows and social media. I emerge in time to realize that I've lost hours where I could've been doing something productive....and it's past my own bedtime.

5.      What’s your favorite meal?

One where I'm sitting at the table with the family, and maybe a friend or two.  (And hey, if it's a meal I didn't try to cook on the stove: BONUS!) ;)  The husband is a fantastic cook, and our family favorite is a super delicious spaghetti. *melts*
